The Outlier
Mara Ortiz didn’t realize she had become an outlier until the language changed around her.
The tasks were still there. The volume hadn’t increased. On paper, her workload looked identical to the week before. Balanced. Within range.
What changed was the timing.
Requests arrived without context now—assigned, not asked. Deadlines shifted slightly earlier, just enough to compress the space where she used to think. Where she used to breathe.
Mara told herself it was temporary. Recalibration always felt worse before it felt better. Evan had said that once, in a meeting she half-remembered but fully trusted.
She adapted. She always did.
When the intake form replaced the hallway conversations, Mara filled it out carefully. Clear language. Neutral tone. She selected “process clarification” instead of “concern.”
The response came back automated.
Thank you for your feedback. Your input has been recorded and will be reviewed in aggregate.
Aggregate was the word that stuck.
By Wednesday, her name appeared twice on the dashboard Evan checked each morning—highlighted softly, not red. Yellow. A variance. Not urgent. Just visible.
Mara noticed the change in how people spoke to her. Shorter messages. Fewer follow-ups. The absence of small adjustments coworkers used to make without thinking.
She stayed late that night to catch up, even though the system said she wasn’t behind.
At 9:47 p.m., a notification appeared.
TASK REALLOCATED
No explanation. No warning.
Just direction.
Mara stared at the screen long enough for the office lights to dim automatically around her. Somewhere in the building, a sensor decided the space was no longer in use.
The next morning, the dashboard showed improvement.
Mara’s name no longer appeared at all.
